mich >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. hi, everyone. good afternoon. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm elizabeth wenger. michelle griego is off. we begin with some breaking news. there is a possible breakthrough in the investigation into the boston marathon bombing. >> cbs news has learned that a possible suspect or person of interest may have been identified. cbs reporter randall pinkston is live in boston. he has the very latest on the

investigation and a possible suspect. randall. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that investigators have identified a suspect who may have been behind the bombings tow boston marathon. his face was caught on surveillance video. cbs news confirms a possible suspect has been identified in the boston marathon bombing case. a law enforcement force says the young man was identified at the surveillance video at the second blast seen on a cell phone at the same time the first bomb exploded. sources say investigators zeroed in on the suspect after checking cell phone records in the area at that exact time. fbi photos from the boston marathon bombing investigation show the remains of an explosive device including twisted pieces of metal charred wires and a battery. one photo shows a half inch nail and part of a zipper stained with blood. the items are now being analyzed at fbi headquarters in virginia. >> there, specialized examiners

will reconstruct the device or devices and determine the makeup and components. >> reporter: investigators say the bombs were heavy and carried to the scene in black nylon bags. they were pressure cooker bombs packed with shrapnel, the lid of one apparently blew into the roof of a nearby building. similar devices have been used in middle east terrorist attacks. the pressure cookers briefly constrained the blast and when the pressure is released, they can send heavy pieces of metal flying through the air. three people were killed and more than 170 injured in the blast. this morning, doctors at boston medical center said they performed amputations on five victims. they have also been removing debris from victims. >> some are metal, some plastic, some wood, some concrete. >> reporter: president obama will be in boston tomorrow to attend a memorial service for the victims. what is not yet clear is whether there is more than one person involved in the plot. authorities continued to request assistance from the public asking for tips to try to track down those responsible

for the bombings. reporting live in boston, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> thank you. we are expecting a news conference from the fbi on the latest developments coming up later today. here's what we know now. sources say a suspect or person of interest has been identified less than 48 hours after the deadly attack in boston. the man signed in the surveillance video at the second blast location, sources say he was seen placing a backpack on the ground while talking on his cell phone. the man was wearing a black jacket, a gray hooded sweatshirt. he also had a baseball cap on backwards. sources say kitchen pressure cookers were packed with explosives, nails and other lethal shrapnel and used during the explosion. of course, we'll have more on this developing story on the news at 5:00 and you can also follow the story at our website, kpix.com. online scammers are already looking to profit from the

boston marathon bombings. dozens of charity websites were created shortly after the attack. experts say it's too early to tell if the sites are legitimate. scams are more likely on social media. do your homework before donating money. and we have an update now on the martinez boy who was injured in boston. aaron hern's mother reports on facebook that her 12-year-old son has opened his eyes, a couple of times. she says he has communicated with nods that he is okay, he is comfortable. aaron is due to have surgery sometime today. he is expected to remain in boston for at least another week. some developing news out of washington, d.c. this hour. security is on high alert after the discovery of a suspicious letter addressed to the president. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live in the newsroom with what authorities have found so far. >> reporter: initial tests on the letters to president obama indicate the presence of the

poison ricin. three questionable packages will be sent to senate office buildings in the last 24 hours and numerous reports of suspicious letters one in michigan, one in arizona and two suspicious letter sent the phoenix office of u.s. senator jeff flake. parts of the building were evacuated but the letters are of no threat. this round of scares comes after two others this week. the suspicious letter a dressed to president obama was found at the same facility where a letter to senator roger wicker was found yesterday, a processing facility in suburban maryland where congressional mail is tested before going to the capital. an employee noticed a white substance on the letter and hazmat team was seen pulling up to the building. initial field tests for ricin showed mixed results. no one at the facility became ill. >> when preliminary tests are done, secondary -- and i suppose tertiary tests are made

because of the need for accuracy and to be sure about what the substances might be. >> reporter: in a bulletin obtained by the "associated press" the fbi says the letters to obama and senator wicker were postmarked memphis, tennessee, both letters say, quote, to see a wrong and not expose it is to become a silent partner to its continuance. both are signed, i am kc and i approve this message. >> reporter: investigators are giving few details about the case but wicker's colleague, senator claire mccaskill, says police have a suspect. she told reporters, quote, the person that is a suspect writes a lot of letters to members. but as far as the connection to the boston bombing, authorities say no. >> i would point to the statement by the fbi as you said that they have made that said they have no indication of a connection between the two. >> reporter: this is not the first ricin scare on capitol hill. in 2004, a letter sent to senate majority leader bill frist made it to the capital and senate office buildings

were shut down for days. you may be wondering what is ricin? it is a poison found naturally in castor beans and in high doses it can be fatal if ingested or inhaled. lab tests on these letters are expected to take 24 to 48 hours. in the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> is any of this affecting normal business at the capital today? >> reporter: there is a heavy police presence at the capital did you they are still doing tours. it's unclear right now whether or not senators will receive their mail tomorrow and friday. there's been some talk of all of that being postponed so everything can be properly tested. >> certainly understand. anne makovec live in our newsroom, thank you. it appears any celebrating for bipartisan bills to tighten gun control is over. with roll call now about an hour away, sponsors of the bill say the votes aren't there. the bill would extend background checks to nearly all gun purchases. now republicans are pushing a counterproposal. so how do voters feel?

an "associated press" poll shows 49% of americans are in favor of tougher gun laws. that is down from 58% in january. ♪[ music ] margaret thatcher was laid to rest today in london. more than 2,000 people along with queen elizabeth attended the former prime minister's funeral. thatcher held office from 1979 to 1990. the conservative leader's funeral was also met by protestors. she died earlier this month. margaret thatcher was 87. a blaring car alarm helped save a family from a house fire on the peninsula. the flames gutted a san mateo home and garage this morning. the man was actually up getting ready for work around 3:30 a.m. when he heard the car alarm go off. he ran out, saw his car on fire and the father then ran back in the house and got his wife and seven children out safely. well, a bay area icon has moved into its new digs

officially at pier 15 in san francisco. and kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington is live at the exploratorium with the opening day's festivities. are there big crowds? >> reporter: yeah, a lot of smiles at the new exploratorium today not only from the kids but their parents, city leaders and exploratorium staff delighted to open the doors to their one of a kind museum. >> what an amazing journey. [ applause ] >> reporter: a journey that started more than a decade ago with an idea, then a promise in 2006 to build. and now nearly $300 million of renovations later, the new exploratorium is officially open. [ applause ] >> reporter: exploratorium directors mayor lee and lieutenant governor newsom spoke outside the museum's new home along san francisco's waterfront at piers 15 and 17, expressing their gratitude to the board of directors and community. >> thank you for making this a dream, making this dream a reality for children and adults in our city and around the

[ sniffing ] [ seagulls squawking ] pregnant woman may not haveo give-up alcohol. cbs reporter welcome back. in today's healthwatch, a new study shows pregnant women may not have to give up alcohol. cbs reporter alison harmelin with the experts who say, light drinking may not be harmful to babies. >> reporter: first time mother sarah little made sure to eat a balanced diet while she was

pregnant with baby aaron. the 31-year-old would also have an occasional drink. >> i had a glass of wine, i don't know, once every month? once every six weeks? just to enjoy with friends or relax. >> reporter: a new study suggests a little alcohol isn't harmful to a baby's development. researchers in england compared 10,000 seven-year-olds. a quarter had mothers who drank lightly. the others didn't. >> we looked at children's social, emotional and intellectual development and felt there were no differences in terms of harmful effects. >> reporter: heavy alcohol son sumtion during pregnancy is long linked to health and developmental problems in children. researchers have only resently begun to look at light drinking one to two drinks a week. the study says pregnant women can drink a small glass of wine every week or half pint of beer. more research needs to be done to see if any developmental problems emerge later in childhood. some women say no drink is

more of an offshore wind and northerly component out there to bring you plenty of sunshine. temperatures already beginning to warm up nicel 65 concord, 64 san francisco. blowing winds a bit. overlooking san jose some winds in that direction, as well. those to 28 miles per hour gusting to 33. that's the highest in fairfield right now. 28 in napa. and 21 miles per hour in concord. it will be breezy throughout the afternoon. no getting around that. but still, it's going to be warmer today and then tonight, should be mostly clear and that warming trend will continue over the next few days lots of sunshine coming our way. and i think a lot less wind, too. this ridge is going to start to build in across the state of california and along the west coast. that is going to keep us dry with some much warmer temperatures expected. wouldn't be surprised to get near 80 by tomorrow afternoon. of course, everything is growing now and so the pollen count is running high. so yeah, don't be surprised to see the allergies over the next few days running high, as well.
